Helping More Patients Lose Weight with Low-BMI LAP-BAND® Surgery
LAP-BAND® can be a highly effective way to lose weight and keep it off. During the procedure, a specialized LAP-BAND® device is placed around your stomach to significantly reduce your food and caloric intake. Unfortunately, insurance carriers typically only cover this procedure for people with a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or higher. To help patients who do not meet this requirement, LifeBand® offers low-BMI LAP-BAND® surgery in Fairfield County, CT. Contact us today to learn how LAP-BAND® can help you achieve a leaner body and healthier lifestyle.
A Closer Look at the Procedure
LAP-BAND® is a minimally invasive procedure performed with a laparoscope (specialized camera). To begin, your surgeon will make a few small incisions on your abdomen. Next, the laparoscope and surgical instruments will be threaded through the incisions. Working off images projected from the camera, your surgeon will secure the LAP-BAND® around the upper portion of your stomach. This device can be adjusted, even after surgery, to ensure that you lose weight and maintain a new, healthier weight.
Since this is a minimally invasive procedure, you can expect a short recovery period with minimal discomfort and side effects. In fact, many LAP-BAND® patients return to work the week after surgery, and enjoy their normal activity levels about six weeks following the procedure.
What Makes Low-BMI Surgery Different
Many insurance carriers only provide coverage for LAP-BAND® surgery for patients with a BMI of at least 40. This essentially limits the procedure to people who fall in the highest medical classification of obesity. In some cases, insurance will provide coverage for patients with a BMI of 35 (the second medical classification for obesity) or those with certain medical conditions that would improve with weight loss, such as diabetes and high blood pressure. Of course, there are countless patients with lower BMIs who medically qualify and could still benefit from LAP-BAND® surgery.
LAP-BAND has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for patients with BMIs as low as 30. This means that a woman who is 5'5" and 180 pounds would qualify for LAP-BAND. A man who is 5'11" and 215 pounds would also be considered eligible.
