Using Your Flex Spending Account
Patients with a BMI below 40 may be denied insurance coverage for LAP-BAND®, the safe, effective surgical method for achieving significant weight loss. If you have a BMI of 30 to 40, LifeBand® is an alternative to LAP-BAND® created especially for you and can help you lose weight with lasting results. Less expensive than LAP-BAND®, LifeBand® can be funded using your Flex Spending Account, among other options. Our doctors in Fairfield County, CT invite you to explore your options for funding LifeBand® weight loss surgery and get started on the pathway to freedom from unwanted body fat.
LifeBand® surgery is offered by highly trained doctors in a modern, onsite surgical suite. To find out more and make an appointment, contact our practice today.
LifeBand® is essentially the same procedure as LAP-BAND®, but is not performed in the more expensive hospital setting. Because LifeBand® does not require hospitalization, it is more affordable than LAP-BAND®, which typically costs as much as $30,000. LifeBand® at our state-of-the-art facility costs in the region of $10,999.
This alternative treatment was created for patients whose lesser BMI doesn’t qualify them for insurance coverage. Patients can lose between 30 and 100 pounds with this method at a rate of about one to three pounds per week, and clinical studies demonstrate a high likelihood of long-term success.
In our fully equipped surgical facility, patients receive general anesthesia administered by a registered anesthesiologist, then tiny incisions are made in the abdomen. The LifeBand® gastric band is placed around the stomach using advanced laparoscopic tools. This adjustable band is inflated to the desired size, then the incisions are closed, and patients are able to return home for recovery. This FDA-approved procedure is safe and fully reversible.
Funding Treatment Using Your FSA
The federal government authorizes tax benefits for employees who take advantage of a Flexible Spending Account (FSA). If you are covered with health insurance provided by an employer, you are entitled to participate in an FSA. You can choose to have some of your pre-tax salary set aside into an FSA to cover out-of-pocket healthcare costs, including the LifeBand® procedure.
Because funds placed in an FSA are not taxed, your hard-earned money goes further. Instead of paying this money to the government in taxes, you keep it for your own healthcare needs, specifically those treatments and other costs not covered by your conventional insurance plan. FSA contributions are not counted in your annual taxable income, thus reducing your overall tax base.
There are certain specific categories of healthcare costs for which your flex spending account can be used, and weight loss treatment is included in these categories. If your need for weight loss is diagnosed by a licensed physician, LifeBand® treatment can be funded in part by your FSA.
