Determining Your Candidacy
Your pre-operative appointments are an important part of your LifeBand® preparations. At your first consultation, your bariatric surgeon will determine your candidacy for LAP-BAND® by examining your weight, lifestyle, and overall physical health.
LifeBand® candidates should be 18 years of age or older and able to receive anesthesia. During your initial consultation, your bariatric surgeon will also look for any serious health conditions that may affect your candidacy for LifeBand®, including:
- Crohn’s disease
- Ulcerative colitis
- Heart or lung disease
If you suffer from any of these conditions, your surgeon will discuss other options with you. During your consultation, your surgeon will provide detailed instructions to help you prepare for your surgery. You will be asked to follow a low-calorie, high protein diet in the days before your procedure, which will help to shrink your liver and make your procedure as safe as possible.
Preparing for Your New Lifestyle
Success with the LAP-BAND® depends on making lifelong dietary and behavioral changes. Starting lifestyle changes before surgery helps you prepare for the necessary post-operative measures you must take to achieve and maintain a healthy weight. You will work closely with nutritionists to learn healthy eating habits that will benefit your health for the rest of your life, including portion-control and food selection. In the weeks immediately leading up to surgery, you will need to follow very low calorie or high protein liquid diet. Our team can help create a liquid diet for your unique needs for you to follow as you prepare for your surgery. This makes your liver smaller and provides easier surgical access to your stomach. If you are recommended a liquid diet, your nutritionists may recommend vitamin supplements to protect your health and boost your energy.
You will lose weight steadily in the months and years following your surgery. Because of specialized, inflatable "pillows" on your LAP-BAND® and an external port, your bariatric surgeon can adjust the extent to which your band constricts your stomach without surgery. In addition to the benefits of LAP-BAND®, you will enjoy the support of the LifeBand® team whenever you need it. LifeBand® was created with your budget, safety, and comfort in mind.
