Preparing for LAP-BAND®

The LAP-BAND® is FDA approved for patients with a BMI of 30 and above. However, most insurance companies stipulate that patients must have a BMI of 40, or a BMI of 35+ with serious, obesity-related comorbidities. The LifeBand® Program makes gastric banding a possibility for more patients by removing theses barriers and making the procedure more accessible and convenient than traditional, hospital-based programs.

To qualify for LAP-BAND®, you must be at least 18 years old, and should be committed to making serious, long-term lifestyle changes. Before undergoing gastric banding, you will have a thorough consultation with your weight-loss surgeon to discuss your goals and any underlying health conditions that may affect your candidacy. At this time, you will also discuss the risks associated with LAP-BAND®. Your surgeon will ultimately determine whether you are a candidate.

About LAP-BAND® Surgery

LAP-BAND® surgery is performed laparoscopically using ultra-precise instruments and a small camera to reach your stomach with minimal disturbance to surrounding tissues. Your adjustable LAP-BAND® is placed around your stomach through small abdominal incisions that result in minimal scarring. The LAP-BAND® reduces the capacity of your stomach, helping you to ultimately eat less and feel satisfied faster.

Because it is minimally invasive, your procedure can be completed usually in less than an hour, and you will leave our surgical center the same day. When you choose to undergo LAP-BAND® surgery using the LifeBand® approach, your operation and recovery take place in a private room at the practice of Dr. David Passaretti under the care of a highly qualified bariatric surgeon. Dr. Passaretti's office is exceptionally clean and designed for patient comfort.

After LAP-BAND® Surgery

LAP-BAND® has a much shorter recovery period than other bariatric surgeries. You should prepare to take four to six days off of work, avoiding physical activity. While your incisions and physical recovery will be relatively short, you will have several substantial lifestyle changes to make. Your nutritionist and bariatric surgeon will work with you before surgery to prepare you for living with LAP-BAND®, which will include a temporary liquid-only diet, reduced meal sizes, and other changes. After surgery, you will meet with your surgeon to ensure you are healing properly.

In the months following surgery, you will meet with your surgeon and a nutritionist for observation and to make any necessary adjustments to the gastric band. Regular appointments with weight loss professionals are key to your success with LifeBand®.

In some cases, patients will require LAP-BAND® revision surgery. If there are any complications with your LAP-BAND®, your bariatric surgeon will discuss the possibility of removing your LAP-BAND® or replacing it.
